1276 AH1859 CE

Born at Golra Sharif into the blessed Sayyid family of outstanding spiritual pedigree

His birth at Golra Sharif in 1276 AH marked the arrival of a figure who would become one of the most celebrated saints and scholars of the Punjab. His family had a long history of Islamic scholarship and spiritual guidance in the region

Late 1870s CE

Completed traditional Islamic education under his father and other scholars

His early education was at the feet of his father Hadrat Sayyid Shah Ghulam Muhammad (rahmatullahi alayh). He mastered Hadith, Fiqh, Tafsir, and the rational sciences under leading scholars of the Punjab

Took Bay'at in the Qadiri spiritual order

He pledged spiritual allegiance in the Qadiri Sufi order, linking his spiritual chain to the great Awliya Allah of the Indian subcontinent and ultimately to Hadrat Ghaus-ul-A'zam Shaykh Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani (rahmatullahi alayh) in Baghdad

1880s CE

Began his public mission of teaching, spiritual guidance, and defence of Ahl-e-Sunnat beliefs

As his reputation grew, Golra Sharif became a major centre of Islamic learning and Sufi guidance. Scholars, students, and ordinary Muslims came from across the Punjab and beyond seeking his knowledge and barakat (blessings)

c. 1317–1320 AH1900 CE

Scholarly encounter with Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian — led to the writing of Saif-e-Chishtiyayi

When the Qadiani movement emerged in Punjab and began spreading its deviant beliefs about prophethood — denying the finality of prophethood of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) — Hadrat Mehr Ali Shah (rahmatullahi alayh) rose as its most formidable Sunni opponent. His monumental refutation Saif-e-Chishtiyayi exposed the falsity of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad's claims using Quran, Hadith, and rational proofs

c. 1326 AH1908 CE

Mirza Ghulam Ahmad issued a public Mubahalah (prayer-duel) challenge which was accepted — but Mirza died before the appointed time, widely seen among Sunnis as a divine sign

The famous Mubahalah incident became one of the most talked-about events of that era in the Punjab. The manner in which Mirza Ghulam Ahmad's death occurred before the duel could take place was seen by the Ahl-e-Sunnat as a confirmation of his falsehood and the truthfulness of Hadrat Mehr Ali Shah (rahmatullahi alayh)

1908–1937 CE

Remained at Golra Sharif for the rest of his life, continuing his role as a spiritual guide, teacher, and defender of Islam

His dargah at Golra Sharif became one of the most celebrated Sufi centres in the entire Punjab region. Devotees from across the subcontinent — and later from the Pakistani diaspora worldwide — maintained a continuous connection to his spiritual legacy

  • Devoted much of his life to worship, dhikr (remembrance of Allah), and teaching — maintaining a regime of voluntary prayers, night vigils (tahajjud), and extended periods of khalwah (spiritual seclusion)

    general-islamic-knowledge — Maktaba tul Madina

  • Showed an intense love for the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) — his entire life was oriented around the Sunnah, and his defence of the honour of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was legendary, forming the backbone of his scholarly and spiritual mission

    general-islamic-knowledge — Maktaba tul Madina

  • Despite his great fame and the thousands who came to him, he remained humble, devoid of worldly attachment, and consistent in his simple way of life — embodying the Sufi principle of zuhd (renunciation of worldly attractions)

    general-islamic-knowledge — Maktaba tul Madina

  • Maintained an extraordinary reverence for his own murshid and for the saints of the Qadiri tradition — regularly performing Fatiha at the shrines of the pious and encouraging his murids to do the same

    general-islamic-knowledge — Maktaba tul Madina

  • His love for the Holy Quran was profound — he taught its recitation and tajwid to his students personally and placed the highest emphasis on learning, memorising, and acting upon the Quran in all dimensions of life
