Prophetic vision granted forty days before his birth

Forty days before his birth, his maternal uncle Hadrat Sayyid Mansoor Bata'hi (rahmatullahi alayh) was granted a dream in which the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) announced the imminent birth of a child of extraordinary spiritual rank, commanding that he be named Ahmad and be sent to Shaykh Abul Fadl Ali Qaari Waasiti for his upbringing

Memorised the Quran at age seven; father passed away in the same year

He completed the memorisation of the entire Quran at the age of seven — the same year his father passed away. He was raised thereafter by his maternal uncle Hadrat Sayyid Mansoor Bata'hi (rahmatullahi alayh)

Sent to Wasit to study under Hadrat Shaykh Ali Qaari Waasiti (rahmatullahi alayh)

His uncle sent him to the city of Wasit to study under the renowned scholar Hadrat Shaykh Ali Qaari Waasiti (rahmatullahi alayh). There he pursued an intensive programme of Islamic learning including Tafseer, Hadith, Fiqh, Ma'ani, logic, and philosophy

Attained mastery of the Islamic sciences by age twenty, also acquiring the inner sciences

By the age of twenty he had mastered the outer Islamic sciences. He also acquired the inner sciences — the path of spiritual purification — from his maternal uncle, Hadrat Sayyid Mansoor Bata'hi (rahmatullahi alayh), combining outward scholarship with inward illumination

Appointed Khalifah at age twenty-eight — date-leaves miracle

When his uncle Hadrat Sayyid Mansoor Bata'hi (rahmatullahi alayh) asked him to cut date-leaves, he did not cut any. When asked why, he said he had heard each leaf engaged in the glorification of Allah Almighty, so he could not bring himself to cut them. His uncle, astonished at this spiritual perception, immediately appointed him as his Khalifah

Founded the Rifaa'iyyah Sufi order

He established the Rifaa'iyyah tariqah — one of the major Sufi orders of the Muslim world — which spread widely across Iraq, Egypt, Syria, and the broader Muslim lands

Lowered his head at the announcement of Hadrat Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani (rahmatullahi alayh)

In Baghdad, Hadrat Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani (rahmatullahi alayh) declared: 'This foot of mine is on the neck of every saint.' Hadrat Imam Ahmad al-Rifai (rahmatullahi alayh) was in far-off Umm-e-Ubaydah at that moment — yet he lowered his head and said: 'Your foot is upon my neck also.' When asked how he knew of this announcement, he explained he had perceived it spiritually and submitted immediately. His act of acceptance became one of the most celebrated moments in Islamic spiritual history.

Khidar Mawsili sees Imam Rifaa'i in the gathering of Ghaus-e-Azam

As narrated by A'la Hadrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (rahmatullahi alayh) in Fatawa Razawiyyah: Khidar Mawsili (rahmatullahi alayh) was once in the presence of Hadrat Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani (rahmatullahi alayh) when a thought entered his mind that he wished to see Imam Ahmad al-Rifai (rahmatullahi alayh). Ghaus-e-Azam (rahmatullahi alayh) lowered his head for a moment and then said: 'O Khidar! Look — this is Shaykh Ahmad.' Khidar Mawsili found himself in the presence of Imam Rifaa'i, who was an awe-inspiring figure. He stood, gave salam, and Imam Rifaa'i said: 'O Khidar! The one who has seen Shaykh Abdul Qadir, the leader of the saints — why does he desire to see me? I am from his subordinates.' After the passing of Ghaus-e-Azam, Khidar Mawsili travelled to Umm-e-Ubaydah and met Imam Rifaa'i in person — it was the same figure he had seen. Imam Rifaa'i said: 'O Khidar! Was the first meeting not sufficient for you?'

Garden purchase — promise of a heavenly palace

At the request of his close disciple Sayyiduna Jamal-ud-Deen (rahmatullahi alayh), Imam Rifaa'i (rahmatullahi alayh) went to purchase a garden from its owner Shaykh Isma'eel, who said he would only sell it in exchange for a heavenly palace. Imam Rifaa'i lowered his head — the colour on his face changed and became pale; after a short while he raised his head and his pallor had turned to redness — a sign of something received in the unseen.

When those present asked how he could say this from distant Umm-e-Ubaydah, he said: 'At this present moment in Baghdad, Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani has made the announcement, so I have lowered my head and complied.'

  • Upon seeing a locust seeking shade, he allowed it to rest on his clothing — such was his compassion towards even the smallest of Allah's creation

  • When children ran away from him out of awe, he followed them and said: 'You became fearful due to me, so forgive me and continue playing' — reflecting a profound concern for the wellbeing of even the youngest members of the community

  • Was appointed Khalifah (spiritual successor) by his uncle Hadrat Sayyid Mansoor Bata'hi (rahmatullahi alayh) after demonstrating that he could hear the glorification (tasbih) of the date-leaves — every leaf he was asked to cut was engaged in remembrance of Allah, so he would not cut it. When his uncle learned this, he immediately appointed him as his successor.

  • 🌟Hadrat Imam Ahmad al-Rifai (rahmatullahi alayh) memorised the entire Quran when he was just SEVEN years old — that is all 30 parts of the Quran by heart before most children even start secondary school!
