Biography
Abu Ali Fudayl ibn Iyad (c. 107-187 AH / 725-803 CE) was a famous early Muslim ascetic and scholar of hadith. Originally from Khorasan, tradition holds he was a highway robber in his youth who repented and devoted himself entirely to Allah after hearing a verse of the Quran. He settled in Makkah near the Haram and became renowned for his piety, weeping during worship, and powerful admonitions. Both Imam Ahmad and Imam Shafi'i praised him highly. His sayings on sincerity (ikhlas), fear of Allah, and detachment from the world are widely quoted.
