Biography
Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Adham al-Balkhi (c. 100-161 AH / 718-778 CE) was a famous early Muslim ascetic and saint from Balkh (present-day Afghanistan). According to tradition, he was a prince who renounced his throne and worldly possessions to devote himself entirely to the worship of Allah. He is considered one of the foremost figures of early Islamic spirituality (zuhd). His sayings on renunciation of the world, sincerity of worship, and purification of the heart are widely quoted in Sufi literature. Imam Ghazali frequently references him in Ihya Ulum al-Din.
