164 AH

Born in Baghdad in Rabi-ul-Awwal, 164 AH

His father passed away during his childhood. His mother raised and educated him with exceptional care and devotion

Began acquiring Hadith knowledge at the age of 16

Commenced his formal study of the prophetic traditions at age 16, showing remarkable dedication that would define his entire life

Began writing Hadith under Imam Abu Yusuf (rahimahullah) — a leading student of Imam Abu Hanifa (rahimahullah)

His early connection to the Hanafi school deepened his formation as a jurist. He also acquired difficult rulings from the books of Imam Muhammad al-Shaybani (rahimahullah)

Undertook extensive journeys across the Islamic world in pursuit of Hadith

Travelled to Kufa, Basra, Yemen, Shaam, Iraq, Hijaz, and Abadan Island — sitting with the foremost Hadith masters of his age and amassing one of the greatest collections of prophetic narrations known to scholarship

His mother prevented him from leaving before dawn in his zeal to seek Hadith

When he attempted to leave in the darkness of early morning for Hadith gatherings, his devoted mother would hold his clothing saying: 'Wait for the morning.' — a testament to both his passion for knowledge and her protective love.

Established the Hanbali school of jurisprudence

Through his vast knowledge of Hadith, his precise legal reasoning, and his uncompromising adherence to the Sunnah, he founded the Hanbali madhab — one of the four great Sunni schools that guides millions of Muslims

Made dua for Imam Shafi'ee (rahimahullah) in every Salah for forty years

A remarkable act of loyalty and spiritual brotherhood — for four decades, not a single Salah passed without his supplication for his beloved teacher

  • Refused to eat melons because he did not know how the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate them — such was the depth of his adherence to the Sunnah

    seerat-imam-ahmad-ibn-hanbal — Maktaba tul Madina

  • On attending a funeral, he would not eat or sleep that entire night — consumed by grief and reflection on death

    seerat-imam-ahmad-ibn-hanbal — Maktaba tul Madina

  • Wept at graves like a mother who had lost her child — his fear of Allah and remembrance of the Hereafter was profound

    seerat-imam-ahmad-ibn-hanbal — Maktaba tul Madina

  • When presented with a doubtful item, he refused to take it — instead, he sold both the doubtful item and its companion and gave all proceeds as Sadaqah rather than risk consuming anything impermissible

    seerat-imam-ahmad-ibn-hanbal — Maktaba tul Madina

  • Recited one Manzil of the Quran daily, and completed the entire Quran separately every seven nights — combining daily devotion with sustained, regular recitation

    seerat-imam-ahmad-ibn-hanbal — Maktaba tul Madina

  • After Isha, he would rest briefly and then remain in worship until Fajr — dedicating his nights to the remembrance of Allah

    seerat-imam-ahmad-ibn-hanbal — Maktaba tul Madina

  • Performed 300 Nawafil (voluntary prayers) every day; even at the age of 80 and during illness he maintained 150 Nawafil daily

    seerat-imam-ahmad-ibn-hanbal — Maktaba tul Madina

  • Preferred solitude and was rarely seen outside the Masjid — his life was centred on worship, knowledge, and service to Islam

    seerat-imam-ahmad-ibn-hanbal — Maktaba tul Madina

  • Even as a seeker of Hadith, when his belongings were stolen, he did not weep over his money or possessions — he only became distressed when he could not find the pages on which his Hadith notes were written.

Blessings of Imam Ahmad Bin Hanbal, p.10 — Maktaba tul Madina

  • At the time of performing Hajj, he encountered a bucket being used by pilgrims at the well. Out of piety and scrupulousness, he moved away from the well rather than use the bucket after others — an act that testified to his extraordinary caution in spiritual etiquette.

Blessings of Imam Ahmad Bin Hanbal, p.12 — Maktaba tul Madina

  • Countless scholars from every era showed him the utmost reverence — Sayyiduna Idrees ibn Abdul Kareem was among those who testified to this, stating that he never met a scholar who did not show Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (rahimahullah) the highest respect.

Blessings of Imam Ahmad Bin Hanbal, p.6 — Maktaba tul Madina

  • A woman who had been disabled for twenty years was restored to walking through the barakah (spiritual blessing) of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (rahimahullah) — her disability, carried for two decades, was removed through the blessing of his mother's sincere supplication on her behalf.

Blessings of Imam Ahmad Bin Hanbal, p.14 — Maktaba tul Madina

  • After his passing, a man who had moved downstream along a river out of reverence for Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah) — so as not to use water that the Imam had used in wudu — was forgiven by Allah Almighty. Scholars recorded this as a miracle manifesting through the Imam's exalted rank, even after his death.
