Born after a six-month pregnancy (miraculous, like Prophet Yahya (peace be upon him)). The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the Azaan in his right ear and the Takbeer in his left ear, gave him Tahneek from his own blessed mouth, and made Du'a for him. — Madinah Munawwarah

Appearance

physicalResemblance: Hadrat Ali (radi Allahu anhu) narrated that Imam Husayn (radi Allahu anhu) resembled the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from his blessed chest to his blessed feet, while Imam Hasan (radi Allahu anhu) resembled him from head to chest.

imamah: A Tabi'i saint narrated: 'I visited Imam Husayn (radi Allahu anhu) and saw that he was wearing an Imamah (turban), and some of his blessed hair were showing from beneath it.'

beard: He adorned his blessed face with the Sunnah beard of his beloved grandfather, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Imam Husayn (radi Allahu anhu) narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The one whom I am mentioned in front of yet he does not send Salat upon me is miserly.'

When riding behind Hadrat Nu'man ibn Basheer (radi Allahu anhu), Imam Husayn (radi Allahu anhu) insisted on sitting at the back, citing a saying of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard from his blessed mother Hadrat Fatimah az-Zahra (radi Allahu anha): 'The owner of the ride is deserving of sitting at the front of his ride.'

Showed deep reverence for his elder brother Imam Hasan (radi Allahu anhu) — when asked to reconcile first, he declined so as not to enter Paradise before his elder brother, stating he had heard from the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): 'The one who is first to reconcile will also enter Paradise first'

Gave 99 dinars to a man who had already received 100 from Imam Hasan (radi Allahu anhu), not wishing to give the same amount as his elder brother out of profound respect

Freed a female slave upon receiving a bouquet of flowers from her, citing it as the etiquette taught by Allah Almighty

Gave three correct answers to a Bedouin's three questions — (1) the greatest action is embracing faith in Allah; (2) salvation from destruction comes through certainty in Allah; (3) what adorns a person is knowledge accompanied by forbearance — and gifted him the entire bag of money

When a man cursed him and his father, he responded not with anger but by reciting Quranic verses on forgiveness, made Du'a for the man, and displayed such compassion that the man's hatred immediately turned to love

Went to the Masjid and brought all the poor people present back to his home to share in food and perfume that had been prepared, insisting none of it be saved

A poor man knocked on his door reciting poetry of praise; Imam Husayn (radi Allahu anhu) gave all 200 remaining dirhams from his household to him, apologising that it was not more

Dismounted his ride to eat with poor people who had invited him, then mounted them on his animal and took them to his house where he fed them, clothed them, and gave them dirhams

Named all three of his sons 'Ali' out of his profound love for his father Hadrat Ali (radi Allahu anhu) — Ali Akbar, Ali Awsat (Imam Zayn ul-Aabideen), and Ali Asghar

Refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid ibn Muawiyah

Accepted letters from the people of Kufa inviting him to lead opposition to Yazid's rule

Travelled toward Kufa seeking to mobilise resistance against tyranny

On the night of Ashura (10th Muharram), asked his brother Hadrat Abbas Alamdaar (radi Allahu anhu) to delay the battle until the morning so that they could spend the night in the worship of Allah Almighty — Salah, recitation of the Quran, Du'a and seeking forgiveness

Offered his final Fajr Salah in congregation while enemies surrounded his camp, and was martyred in a state of prostration before Allah Almighty

  • A man named 'Amr bin Lays, upon seeing his vast army, wept and expressed his sincere wish to have been present at Karbala to sacrifice everything for Imam Husayn (radi Allahu anhu). The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appeared in a dream to a saint and said: 'Inform Amr bin Lays that we are aware of the thought that entered his heart and we have accepted his intentions.' After death, Amr bin Lays was seen in a dream and said he was forgiven by Allah Almighty due to this sincere intention.

Take this [charity] and I seek your forgiveness, as there is not much and we have been commanded to be generous in every state; these are just a few, but if I had more, I would give them to you also.

This war should be delayed until tomorrow by any means, so that we can spend this night in the worship of Allah Almighty. Allah Almighty is well aware that Salah, recitation of the Quran, making Du'a and seeking forgiveness in abundance is very dear to me.

Whoever loved us for the sake of Allah Almighty, he and us will be like this on the Day of Judgement.
Be cautious of injustice, for the supplication of the oppressed reaches the court of Allah Almighty.
