Biography
Qadi Iyad ibn Musa al-Yahsubi رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه — The Author of Ash-Shifa Qadi Abu al-Fadl Iyad ibn Musa al-Yahsubi رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه was born in Ceuta (Sabta), North Africa, in 476 AH (1083 CE). He was one of the greatest Maliki scholars, jurists, hadith masters, and men of letters in Islamic history. He studied under numerous scholars across North Africa and Andalusia, excelling in hadith, fiqh, Arabic language, and history. He was appointed Qadi (judge) of Ceuta at the age of 35 in 515 AH, and later served as Qadi of Granada in Andalusia. His most celebrated work is Kitab Ash-Shifa bi Ta'rif Huquq al-Mustafa (Healing by the Recognition of the Rights of the Chosen One), a comprehensive and beloved text on the qualities, miracles, and rights of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This book has been studied, taught, and commented upon across the Muslim world for centuries and remains one of the most important works of Seerah and devotional literature. Among his other works are Ikmal al-Mu'lim bi Fawa'id Muslim (a commentary on Sahih Muslim), Tartib al-Madarik (a biographical dictionary of Maliki scholars), and al-Ilma' ila Ma'rifat Usul al-Riwayah (on the sciences of hadith narration). Qadi Iyad رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه was known for his deep love of the Prophet ﷺ, his vast scholarship, and his commitment to justice. He passed away in Marrakesh on the 9th of Jumada al-Thani 544 AH (1149 CE). His legacy endures through Ash-Shifa, which continues to inspire love for the Prophet ﷺ in the hearts of Muslims worldwide.
