Biography
Sayyidatuna Safiyyah bint Huyayy رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا — Mother of the Believers Sayyidatuna Safiyyah bint Huyayy ibn Akhtab رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا was a wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and one of the Mothers of the Believers (Ummahat al-Mu'mineen). She was of noble lineage, being a descendant of the Prophet Harun (Alayhis Salam) through the Jewish tribe of Banu Nadir. Her father, Huyayy ibn Akhtab, was the chief of the Banu Nadir tribe. Sayyidatuna Safiyyah رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا embraced Islam at the time of the Battle of Khaybar in 7 AH. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ offered her the choice between returning to her people or accepting Islam and becoming his wife. She chose Islam and marriage to the Prophet ﷺ, who stipulated her freedom as her mahr (dowry). She was known for her patience, wisdom, and eloquence. The scholars Ibn Abd al-Barr and Ibn al-Athir describe her as one of the wisest women of her time. She narrated ten ahadith from the Prophet ﷺ. Her loyalty to the Muslim community was demonstrated during the siege of the third Caliph, Sayyiduna Uthman رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ, when she courageously arranged a passage between her home and his to supply provisions to his family. The Prophet ﷺ was with her for nearly four years before his passing. She was only twenty-one years old at that time and lived as a widow for thirty-nine years, devoting herself to worship and piety. Sayyidatuna Safiyyah رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا passed away during the month of Ramadan in 50 AH at the age of sixty. She was laid to rest in the blessed graveyard of Jannat al-Baqi in Madinah Munawwarah alongside the other Mothers of the Believers.
