Khwaja Bahauddin Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Bukhari, known as Shah Naqshband (718-791 AH / 1318-1389 CE), was the founder and namesake of the Naqshbandi Sufi order, one of the most widespread spiritual paths in the Muslim world. Born near Bukhara (present-day Uzbekistan), he emphasised silent dhikr, strict adherence to the Sunnah, and awareness of Allah in every breath (hush dar dam). His spiritual method shaped millions of Muslims across Central Asia, the Ottoman Empire, and South Asia.
