The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'By Allah! You (Makkah) are the best land among all the lands of Allah and I hold you dearest among all the lands of Allah. By Allah! If I had not been forced to leave this place, I would definitely not have left it.' Scholars note that after the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, Madinah was blessed with the greater honour — and 'in the eyes of devotees, Madinah is greater because it is the place where the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rests.'
