Sacred Moments Illuminated

Ramadan Mubarak

Ramadan is the most sacred month of the Islamic calendar. It is a great bounty of Allah that He has granted us a tremendous gift in the form of Ramadan, whose every moment is full of mercy. The reward of good deeds is multiplied many times in this month. The reward of a Nafl act is equivalent to that of a Fard one, while the reward of a Fard act is multiplied 70 times. In this month, even the sleep of a fasting person is considered an act of worship.

Essential Duas

Suhur (Pre-Dawn) — Niyyah for Fasting

I intend to fast tomorrow for the month of Ramadan.

Iftar (Breaking Fast) Dua

O Allah, for You I have fasted, in You I believe, upon You I rely, and with Your sustenance I break my fast.

Practical Guide to Fasting

  • Eat Suhur (pre-dawn meal) as it contains blessings — do not skip it
  • Do not eat excessively at Suhur or Iftar; the enjoyment of fast lies in bearing hunger and thirst
  • Break your fast with dates or water, following the Sunnah
  • Avoid excessive sleeping during the day — a fasting person should stay awake to feel hunger and earn greater reward
  • Guard your tongue from backbiting, lying, and argumentation — the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) said if someone provokes you while fasting, say 'I am fasting'
  • Increase Quran recitation, Salawat upon the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam), and Dhikr throughout the day
  • Give charity generously — the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) was the most generous in Ramadan
  • Perform Taraweeh prayer (20 Rak'at) every night — it is Sunnat-ul-Mu'akkadah

30 Days of Ramadan

Day 1Days of Mercy
On the first night of Ramadan, the portals of the skies and Paradise are opened which remain open until the last night. The one who fasts on the first day of Ramadan will be forgiven for his sins until the last day of the month.

Shu'ab-ul-Iman, Hadith 3635

Make a sincere intention (niyyah) for fasting the entire month. Set a goal for how much Quran you wish to recite.

I intend to fast tomorrow for the month of Ramadan.

Day 2Days of Mercy
Fasting is the door of worship.

Al-Jami'-us-Saghir, Hadith 2415

Fast is a hidden form of worship — only Allah knows about your fast. Cherish this private connection with your Creator.

O Allah, I ask You by Your mercy which encompasses all things, to forgive me.

Day 3Days of Mercy
When the month of Ramadan begins, the gates of Heaven are opened, the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained.

Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1899

Take advantage of the devils being chained — break bad habits now. It is easier to resist temptation in Ramadan.

Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the torment of the Fire.

Day 4Days of Mercy
Whoever fasts Ramadan with faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.

Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 38

Ensure your fast is accompanied by sincerity (ikhlas). Fast not merely out of habit, but with genuine faith and hope for reward.

O Allah, forgive all my sins, small and great, first and last.

Day 5Days of Mercy
Fast; you will get healthy.

Ad-Dur-rul-Manshur, vol. 1, p. 440

Fasting improves physical and spiritual health. Avoid excessive eating at Suhur and Iftar — the enjoyment of fast lies in bearing thirst and hunger.

O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining, I seek help through Your mercy.

Day 6Days of Mercy
Allah said: Every deed of the son of Adam is for himself except fasting — it is for Me and I shall reward it.

Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1904

Remember that fasting is uniquely for Allah. Keep your fast pure from backbiting, lying and other sins of the tongue.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave and from the torment of the Fire.

Day 7Days of Mercy
The one reciting Salat upon me the most will be the closest to me on the Day of Judgement.

Jami' Tirmidhi, Hadith 484

Increase your recitation of Salawat (Durood) upon the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) throughout the day.

O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad and upon the family of our master Muhammad, and grant peace.

Day 8Days of Mercy
The best worship is the one that involves more hardship.

Kashf-ul-Khifa, vol. 1, Hadith 459

Avoid excessive sleeping during the day while fasting. Remain awake so you can feel the hunger and earn greater reward.

My Lord, expand my chest and ease my task for me.

Day 9Days of Mercy
Whoever gives Iftar to a fasting person will earn the same reward as the fasting person without the fasting person's reward being reduced at all.

Jami' Tirmidhi, Hadith 807

Invite others to share Iftar with you, even if it is just a date and water. The reward of feeding a fasting person is immense.

O Allah, for You I have fasted, in You I believe, upon You I rely, and with Your sustenance I break my fast.

Day 10Days of Mercy
The first ten days of Ramadan are mercy, the middle ten days are forgiveness, and the last ten days are freedom from the Fire.

Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, Hadith 1887

The first ten days of mercy are complete — reflect on the mercy you have received and prepare for the days of forgiveness ahead.

O Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of those who show mercy.

Day 11Days of Forgiveness
When a servant of Allah fasts a day for the sake of Allah, He distances his face from the Fire by a distance of seventy years.

Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1894

Seek forgiveness sincerely — the middle ten days are days of forgiveness. Make istighfar a constant companion.

I seek forgiveness from Allah my Lord from every sin and I repent to Him.

Day 12Days of Forgiveness
This month (Ramadan) is called Ramadan because it burns sins.

Kanz-ul-Ummal, vol. 8, p. 217

Let Ramadan burn away your sins through genuine repentance. Identify a bad habit you want to leave and make a firm resolve.

O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves.

Day 13Days of Forgiveness
The fish in the seas ask for forgiveness for the one who fasts until the time of Iftar.

Attarghib Wattarhib, vol. 2, Hadith 6

Even creation prays for the fasting person. Be mindful that your fast is not just abstaining from food, but also from sin.

Glory be to Allah and His is the praise. Glory be to Allah, the Magnificent.

Day 14Days of Forgiveness
The sleep of a fasting person is worship, his silence is Tasbih, his prayers are answered, and his good deeds are multiplied.

Shu'ab-ul-Iman, al-Bayhaqi

Even your rest during a fast is counted as worship. Make the most of every moment — including rest — with good intentions.

O Allah, You are the Pardoner and You love to pardon, so pardon me.

Day 15Days of Forgiveness
Allah said: He leaves his food, drink and desires for My sake. Fasting is for Me and I shall reward for it.

Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1904

You are now at the midpoint of Ramadan. Renew your intention and increase your efforts in worship for the remaining days.

Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from Yourself.

Day 16Days of Forgiveness
Whoever does not give up lying and acting upon lies, Allah has no need of his giving up food and drink.

Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1903

Guard your tongue. Fasting is not just about food — avoid lying, backbiting, arguing, and all forms of harmful speech.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done and the evil of what I have not done.

Day 17Days of Forgiveness
The month of Ramadan, in which was sent down the Quran — the guidance for mankind, the direction and the clear criteria to judge between right and wrong.

Surah al-Baqarah, Verse 185

The 17th of Ramadan marks the day of the Battle of Badr and the revelation of the Quran. Dedicate extra time to Quran recitation today.

O Allah, make the Quran the spring of my heart and the light of my chest.

Day 18Days of Forgiveness
Recite the Quran, for it will come as an intercessor for its companions on the Day of Judgement.

Sahih Muslim, Hadith 804

Aim to complete as much of the Quran as possible. Even reading a few pages daily with understanding brings immense reward.

My Lord, increase me in knowledge.

Day 19Days of Forgiveness
Charity does not decrease wealth. Allah raises one who forgives, and Allah elevates one who is humble for His sake.

Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2588

Give charity generously in Ramadan. The reward for good deeds is multiplied many times over in this blessed month.

O Allah, enrich me with knowledge and adorn me with forbearance.

Day 20Days of Forgiveness
Value five things before five: your youth before old age, your health before illness, your wealth before deprivation, your leisure before busyness, and your life before death.

Al-Mustadrak, Hadith 7912

The 20th of Ramadan marks the Conquest of Makkah (Fath Makkah). Reflect on the mercy shown even in victory. The last ten days begin tonight!

O Allah, free our necks from the Fire.

Day 21Seek Laylat al-Qadr
Search for Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.

Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 2017

The last ten nights have begun. Increase your worship, especially on the odd nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, 29th). Stay awake in prayer.

O Allah, You are the Pardoner, the Generous, You love to pardon, so pardon me.

Day 22Freedom from Fire
When the last ten days of Ramadan began, the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) would tighten his waist belt (work harder), pray all night, and wake his family.

Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 2024

Follow the Sunnah of intensifying your worship in the last ten days. Wake your family for worship and encourage them.

Our Lord, accept from us, indeed You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

Day 23Seek Laylat al-Qadr
Whoever stands in prayer on Laylat al-Qadr with faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.

Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 2014

This is one of the odd nights — it could be Laylat al-Qadr. Spend the entire night in worship, dua, Quran recitation, and remembrance of Allah.

O Allah, You are the Pardoner and You love to pardon, so pardon me.

Day 24Freedom from Fire
The one repenting of sin is like the one who has not committed the sin at all.

Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 425

Continue making sincere repentance (tawbah). Seek forgiveness for all past sins with genuine remorse and resolve to change.

My Lord, forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day of Reckoning.

Day 25Seek Laylat al-Qadr
Whoever recites Salat upon me a thousand times daily shall not die until he sees his place in Heaven.

Attarghib Wattarhib, vol. 2, Hadith 22

Another odd night — increase Salawat upon the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) abundantly tonight.

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

Day 26Freedom from Fire
Whoever loves Masjid, Allah loves him.

Mu'jam Awsat, Hadith 2379

Spend as much time as possible in the Masjid during these final nights. If you are able, observe I'tikaf (spiritual retreat).

O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and seek refuge from the Fire.

Day 27Seek Laylat al-Qadr
Laylat al-Qadr is better than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and Jibril by the commandment of their Lord for every affair. That is all peace till the rising of dawn.

Surah al-Qadr, Verses 3-5

The 27th night is widely considered to be Laylat al-Qadr. Dedicate this entire night to worship — Salah, Quran, Dhikr, and Dua. One night of worship here is better than 83 years!

O Allah, You are the Pardoner and You love to pardon, so pardon me.

Day 28Freedom from Fire
Whoever stood (to offer Salah) in the nights of Eid in order to earn reward, his heart will not die on the day when hearts of people will die.

Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 1782

Begin preparing for Eid — calculate and pay your Zakat al-Fitr (Sadaqat al-Fitr) before the Eid prayer.

O Allah, accept from us our fasting, our standing in prayer, our prayers, and our supplications.

Day 29Seek Laylat al-Qadr
The one spending the nights of the two Eids worshipping Allah, Heaven becomes obligatory for him.

Attarghib Wattarhib, vol. 2, Hadith 2

This may be the last night of Ramadan. Worship throughout the night of Eid — it is called Laylat al-Jaizah (the Night of Reward). Pay Sadaqat al-Fitr if not yet paid.

O Allah, help me in remembering You, being grateful to You, and worshipping You in the best manner.

Day 30Freedom from Fire
On the morning of Eid, Allah sends His angels to every city where they call out: O Ummah of Muhammad! Come to the court of the Beneficent Allah who grants in abundance and forgives even the most severe sins.

Attarghib Wattarhib, vol. 2, Hadith 23

If Ramadan completes 30 days, make the most of this final day. Prepare for Eid with gratitude — Allah has blessed you with an entire month of worship and forgiveness.

O Allah, make us among those who are accepted and do not make us among those who are deprived.

The Last Ten Nights & Laylat al-Qadr

Laylat al-Qadr is an extremely blessed and sacred night. It is called Laylat al-Qadr because the commandments of the whole year are recorded in this night. The worship performed in this night has immense excellence — better than a thousand months (more than 83 years and 4 months). Angels descend in such great numbers that the earth is crowded with them. Each and every moment of this blessed night is full of peace that remains till dawn. Allah has granted this glorious night only to the Ummah of His Beloved Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam).

Source: Blessings of Ramadan, p. 155-180

  • Search for Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, 29th)
  • The Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) would tighten his belt, pray all night, and wake his family during the last ten days
  • Perform I'tikaf (spiritual retreat) in the Masjid during the last ten days if possible
  • Recite the dua taught by the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam): 'O Allah, You are the Pardoner and You love to pardon, so pardon me'
  • Increase Quran recitation, Salawat, Istighfar, and voluntary prayers throughout the night

Taraweeh — Nightly Prayers of Ramadan

Taraweeh consists of 20 Rak'at and is a Sunnat-ul-Mu'akkadah for every sane and adult Muslim. During the reign of Hadrat Umar al-Farooq (Radiyallahu Anhu), the Muslims would offer 20 Rak'at of Taraweeh in congregation. It is preferable to offer Taraweeh with Jama'at in the Masjid. Reciting and listening to the entire Quran in Taraweeh is Sunnat-ul-Mu'akkadah.

Source: Blessings of Ramadan, p. 135-154

I'tikaf — Spiritual Retreat

I'tikaf is a Sunnah Mu'akkadah 'alal Kifayah during the last ten days of Ramadan. The Mu'takif (one performing I'tikaf) devotes himself entirely to the worship of Allah in the Masjid, distancing himself from worldly distractions. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) would regularly observe I'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan.

Eid ul-Fitr — The Festival of Breaking the Fast

The blessed night of Eid ul-Fitr is referred to as Laylat al-Jaizah (the Night of Reward). On the morning of Eid, Allah sends His angels to every city where they stand at the end of every street and call out to the Ummah of Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) to come to the court of their Beneficent Lord. Allah forgives those who gather for the Eid prayer and grants whatever they ask for concerning their Hereafter.

Source: Blessings of Ramadan, p. 247-274

  • Pray throughout the night of Eid — one whose heart is alive on this night will not die when hearts die
  • Pay Sadaqat al-Fitr before the Eid prayer
  • Eat an odd number of dates before going to the Eid prayer
  • Recite Takbir on the way to the Eid prayer grounds
  • Take a different route going to and returning from the Eid prayer
  • Celebrate with gratitude, not extravagance — avoid wastefulness
